Creating Holiday Images for Curlsmith
I recently had the opportunity to photograph a holiday content update for Curlsmith, the hair-care brand from Helen of Troy. The shoot was created to provide fresh seasonal imagery for Curlsmith’s website and Amazon Brand Store, with a focus on bringing a festive holiday feel to the brand while keeping the products front and center.
The goal was to create polished, engaging images that could work across multiple digital platforms while staying true to Curlsmith’s colorful and playful visual identity.
Creating the Holiday Look
One of the challenges of holiday product photography is creating a seasonal environment without letting the props and styling overpower the product.
For one of the images, we created a winter scene using artificial snow. The setup was relatively simple, but getting the right amount of snow in the air—and in the right place—took a little experimentation.
As you can see in the behind-the-scenes video, my assistant and the client helped create the effect by throwing handfuls of artificial snow through the set while I captured the shot.
Sometimes the final image looks effortless. Getting there can be a little more involved.
Commercial Product Photography
The finished images were created for use across Curlsmith's digital channels, including their website and Amazon Brand Store. The shoot combined product photography, creative styling, lighting, and set design to create images that could showcase the products while communicating the holiday season.
I enjoy this type of commercial photography because it combines the technical side of product photography with the creative problem-solving that happens on set.
